CMI vs ILM: which management qualification should you choose?

CMI (Chartered Management Institute) and ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) both offer Ofqual-regulated management qualifications at identical RQF levels. The single biggest differentiator is that only CMI qualifications give you access to the Chartered Manager (CMgr) designation. ILM, part of City & Guilds, has stronger brand recognition in the public sector and NHS. Both are widely valued by UK employers across all sectors.

CMI vs ILM is the most common comparison search among people considering a management qualification in the UK. Both are legitimate, nationally recognised awarding bodies. The difference comes down to which pathway matters more to your career goals — Chartered Manager status, public sector recognition, or simply the stronger name with your specific employer.

What does CMI offer that ILM does not?

CMI is the only professional body in the UK and Ireland with a royal charter specifically for management and leadership. This means CMI can award Chartered Manager (CMgr) status — the highest professional designation in UK management, equivalent to chartered status in other professions. Chartered Manager holders use the letters CMgr after their name and are required to demonstrate ongoing CPD to maintain the designation.

CMI also runs the Management Direct resource library, which members access throughout their qualification and career. It includes over 1,500 management tools, research reports, and CPD resources. CMI publishes widely cited management research and lobbies government on management and leadership policy, giving CMI members a professional community of significant weight.

What does ILM offer that CMI does not?

ILM is part of City & Guilds Group, the world's largest awarding organisation. ILM qualifications benefit from City & Guilds' reach and brand recognition, which is particularly strong in regulated sectors including the NHS, local government, education, and the voluntary sector. For managers working within these sectors, ILM can be the more familiar and valued name on a CV.

ILM also offers a strong suite of coaching and mentoring qualifications at Levels 3, 5, and 7, which are particularly valued in talent development, HR, and organisational learning contexts. The ILM Level 7 Executive Coaching and Mentoring qualification is one of the most recognised coaching credentials in the UK corporate market.

CMI vs ILM — which level should I choose?

  • Level 3: both CMI and ILM offer first-line management qualifications at Level 3; CMI Level 3 Award/Certificate is slightly more widely used in commercial sectors
  • Level 5: the most competitive market — both CMI Level 5 Diploma and ILM Level 5 Diploma are widely accepted; choose CMI if Chartered Manager is your long-term goal
  • Level 7: CMI Level 7 for senior management with MBA top-up ambitions; ILM Level 7 Executive Coaching if your goal is leadership coaching or organisational development

Does it matter which awarding body my employer prefers?

Some employers have a preference for one awarding body over the other, particularly where they have an existing relationship with a training provider. Before enrolling, it is worth checking with your HR or learning and development team whether they have a preferred provider or awarding body. If there is no preference, both CMI and ILM are acceptable choices for career progression.

Where employer sponsorship is involved, employers sometimes specify CMI or ILM. If you are self-funding and your employer has no preference, choose based on whether Chartered Manager status is a goal (CMI) or whether ILM's public sector recognition is relevant to your industry (ILM).

Can I switch from ILM to CMI (or vice versa) mid-career?

Units completed with ILM do not directly transfer to a CMI qualification and vice versa — they are separate awarding body systems. However, employers and Chartered Manager assessors will consider the totality of your management education and experience, so holding qualifications from both bodies is not unusual. Many senior managers hold an ILM qualification from earlier in their career and a CMI qualification at a higher level, or vice versa.

What happens to your CMI or ILM membership after qualifying?

Once you complete your qualification, you can upgrade from student member to the appropriate grade of full membership. CMI membership grades range from Associate CMI (for Level 3 completers) through Member (MCMI) to Fellow (FCMI) for the most senior practitioners. Membership gives you ongoing access to Management Direct, CMI events, and the professional network supporting your Chartered Manager application.

ILM graduates can similarly apply for ILM alumni membership and access the ILM Insights platform. City & Guilds Group membership connects ILM learners to a broader professional network across the group's global operations, which can be particularly valuable for professionals working in international management roles or considering a move to work outside the UK.

FAQ

Your questions answered

Is CMI or ILM better for getting promoted into senior management?

For most private sector senior management roles, CMI Level 5 or Level 7 is marginally more widely cited on job specifications. For NHS, local government, and education management roles, ILM is equally or more frequently specified. In practice, both are strong credentials — the quality of your management application and experience matters far more than the awarding body.

Can I do both CMI and ILM qualifications?

Yes. There is no rule preventing you from holding qualifications from both bodies. Some managers complete an ILM Level 5 early in their career and later add a CMI Level 7 when pursuing director-level roles or Chartered Manager status. The learning content overlaps significantly, so you will find the second qualification builds on and reinforces the first rather than repeating it entirely.

Does CMI Level 5 qualify me as a Chartered Manager?

CMI Level 5 is part of the pathway to Chartered Manager status, but completing the qualification alone does not automatically award CMgr. You also need to demonstrate a minimum of three years of professional management experience and submit a professional development portfolio assessed by CMI. CMI Level 7 makes the CMgr application more straightforward, as the experience requirements are typically met by the time you complete at Level 7.

How do ILM and CMI qualifications compare to an MBA?

An MBA is a postgraduate degree typically requiring two years of full-time study (or three years part-time) and costing £15,000–£40,000 at UK universities. CMI Level 7 and ILM Level 7 cover similar strategic management content, take 12–18 months part-time, and cost significantly less. Some CMI Level 7 completers use their qualification to access a one-year MBA top-up at a UK university, effectively fast-tracking to a full MBA via CMI first.
