This is an Ofqual-regulated Level 4 qualification awarded by TQUK. It is for experienced teaching assistants who want to take on higher-level duties, covering or delivering whole-class lessons, supporting curriculum planning, and taking a mentoring role with other support staff. The HLTA status is a nationally recognised grade in the UK school pay structure.

What you'll need

Entry requirements

You need to be aged 18 or over to enrol. You need access to a classroom environment to gather the portfolio evidence required for the qualification.

A reasonable standard of written English, Functional Skills English Level 2 (or GCSE English grade 4/C) is recommended. You should be comfortable writing short reports and reflective accounts as part of the portfolio assessment process.

A reliable internet connection, a computer or tablet, and basic word-processing skills. All learning materials, assignment briefs, and tutor communications are delivered through your online learner portal. No specialist software is required.

Assessment

How you're assessed

The qualification is fully portfolio-assessed, there are no written exams. You build a portfolio of evidence drawn from your day-to-day work in school, including lesson observations, planning documents, pupil progress records, and reflective accounts of your practice. Each unit has a clear assessment brief with worked examples and marking criteria.

Tutor feedback is returned within 2 working days on every submission. You can refine and resubmit work to reach the required standard. Assessment is graded as Pass or Refer, there are no merit or distinction grades for this qualification. Internal quality assurance is carried out by an experienced TQUK moderator.

Assessments are submitted through your online learner dashboard. Final certification follows external moderation by TQUK and Ofqual registration. Your HLTA certificate is nationally recognised and portable across all maintained schools and most independent settings in England.

Deliver planned lessons and lead small-group and whole-class sessions under the direction of a teacher in maintained schools and academies. HLTA grade is on the national support staff pay scale.

SEN Higher Level Teaching Assistant

Typical salary range

£24,000 to £32,000

Provide specialist support for pupils with education, health, and care plans, including communication support, physical assistance, and behaviour intervention, under the direction of the SENCO.

Cover Supervisor

Typical salary range

£22,000 to £28,000

Manage and supervise classes during planned teacher absence, setting and overseeing work left by the class teacher. Often the entry point for HLTA-graded staff in secondary schools.

Pastoral Lead

Support the social, emotional, and behavioural wellbeing of a year group or key stage, liaising with parents, external agencies, and the safeguarding team.

Primary School Teacher (via ITT/PGCE route)

For HLTAs who go on to complete Qualified Teacher Status through School Direct, PGCE, or a teaching degree apprenticeship. The HLTA qualification and classroom experience strengthen ITT applications significantly.
