What you'll learn

The moment you achieve Functional Skills English Level 2 is the moment a door that has been closed to you, quietly, without much fanfare, swings open. Every nursing degree application, every teaching training programme, every apprenticeship in finance or engineering or healthcare that requires "GCSE English grade 4 or equivalent": this is the qualification that satisfies it. It is GCSE-equivalent, nationally recognised, and for adults who are ready to move forward.

This is an Ofqual-regulated Level 2 qualification awarded by TQUK (Training Qualifications UK). It is formally recognised by Ofqual, the Department for Education, and the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) as equivalent to GCSE English Language at grade 4 (C). The qualification covers reading and comprehension across a range of text types, writing for different purposes and audiences, and speaking, listening, and communicating in formal and informal contexts. It is the benchmark literacy qualification for UK adults.

Entry requirements

You need to be aged 18 or over to enrol.

Confidence working with everyday English (Level 1 standard) before progressing to the Level 2 qualification.

A reliable internet connection, computer or tablet, and basic word-processing skills.

There is no minimum study commitment. As a guide, most learners spend around 6 to 12 hours a week, but you can study more or less based on your own pace and how you feel at the time. The course flexes around your life.

Willingness to attend an approved test centre for the final exam.

Assessment

How you're assessed

Functional Skills are externally examined by TQUK. You complete a reading test, a writing test, and a speaking, listening and communicating assessment. Reading and writing are sat online with remote invigilation from home; the speaking, listening and communicating assessment is conducted online with your tutor.

Throughout the course, your tutor reviews practice work and gives feedback within 2 working days. You also have access to mock exam papers, walkthroughs, and a final readiness check before booking your real exam.

Pass / Fail at Level 1 or Level 2. Once passed, your certificate is issued by TQUK and is recognised UK-wide.
