About this qualification

What you'll learn

The wards, the laboratories, the consulting rooms, every corner of medicine and health science is shaped by the knowledge this diploma builds. The Access to HE Diploma (Science), Medical and Health Sciences Pathway is the route adults without science A levels take to reach the degrees that matter most: medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, and the allied health sciences.

This Level 3 qualification is awarded by OCN London, a QAA-recognised Access Validating Agency. It is for adults aged 19 and over who want to study health and medical sciences at a UK university but did not take science A levels, or who took them years ago and need a structured pathway back into the subject.

What you'll need

Entry requirements

You need to be aged 18 or over to enrol.

You should hold GCSE English at grade 4 (C) or above, or Functional Skills English Level 2. For science and health pathways, GCSE Maths at grade 4 or Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is also expected. If you do not yet have these, you can study them alongside your diploma.

You need a reliable internet connection, a computer or tablet, and basic word-processing skills. All learning materials, assignment briefs, and tutor communications are delivered through your online learner portal.

No prior A levels or formal degree-level study is required. Many of our learners have been out of education for 10 or 20 years. We offer a short optional online assessment at enrolment to identify any gaps and set you up for success.

Assessment

How you're assessed

The qualification is fully portfolio-assessed, there are no traditional written exams. You complete a mix of essays, case studies, reflective pieces, data-analysis tasks, and a final extended research project across all units.

Each unit is graded Pass, Merit, or Distinction. Your 45 graded Level 3 credits stack to generate up to 144 UCAS points, the equivalent of three A levels at grade A*. A profile of Merits gives you around 96 to 120 points, which satisfies most UK degree entry requirements.

Assignments are submitted through your online learner dashboard. Every brief includes a worked example and a marking rubric so you always know what good work looks like. Tutor feedback is delivered within 2 working days, every single time, with the option to refine and resubmit.

Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) is carried out by an experienced moderator across a sample of assessed work each term, ensuring the standard of marking is consistent and fair. The diploma is awarded by OCN London, a QAA-recognised Access Validating Agency.
