Management qualification awarding bodies — CMI, ILM, and beyond

CMI (Chartered Management Institute) and ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) are the two most recognised awarding bodies for management and leadership qualifications in the UK. Both are Ofqual-regulated and appear on the regulated qualifications register. CMI holds a royal charter — unique among management bodies — and is the only route to Chartered Manager (CMgr) status. ILM, part of City & Guilds, carries particularly strong recognition in the public sector and NHS.

Understanding which awarding body to choose — and why employer recognition matters — is important before you enrol on a management qualification. This page explains CMI and ILM in detail, how they compare to other awarding organisations, and what employer recognition means in practice for your career.

What is CMI (Chartered Management Institute)?

The Chartered Management Institute is the professional body for management and leadership in the UK and Ireland. Founded in 1947 and granted a royal charter in 2002, CMI is the only management body in the UK with chartered status. This means CMI can award the Chartered Manager (CMgr) designation — the highest professional management credential in the UK, equivalent to chartership in law, accountancy, or engineering.

CMI has over 157,000 members and a network of over 100,000 Chartered Managers. According to CMI's research (https://www.managers.org.uk/knowledge-and-insights/research/the-value-of-management-and-leadership-qualifications/), 78% of employers say a CMI qualification makes a candidate more attractive, and 76% of qualified managers report measurable improvements in their management effectiveness after completing a CMI qualification.

What is ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management)?

ILM is the UK's leading awarding body for leadership and management development programmes, operating as part of City & Guilds Group — one of the world's largest education and skills organisations with operations in over 50 countries. ILM was founded in 2001 through the merger of the Institute of Supervisory Management (ISM) and the National Examining Board for Supervision and Management (NEBSM).

ILM offers qualifications from Level 2 to Level 7 on the RQF, including a widely respected suite of coaching and mentoring qualifications. ILM's public sector recognition is particularly strong because of City & Guilds' historical relationship with NHS workforce development, local authorities, and further education institutions. ILM qualifications are commonly specified on job descriptions in these sectors.

Are there other management awarding bodies?

  • OTHM (Organisation for Tourism and Hospitality Management) — Level 4–7 management diplomas, Ofqual regulated, popular with international students and online providers
  • Qualifi — Ofqual-regulated awarding body offering Level 3–8 management diplomas with university top-up pathways
  • Pearson BTEC — Level 3–5 business management diplomas, widely available through FE colleges
  • Open University — accredited Level 5 management and leadership NVQ diploma (https://business.open.ac.uk/professional-development/vocational-qualifications/management-and-leadership-level-5-nvq-diploma)
  • CIPD — for HR-specific management qualifications at Level 3, 5, and 7 (not strictly a general management qualification)

CMI and ILM consistently top employer recognition surveys for management and leadership qualifications in the UK. OTHM and Qualifi qualifications are Ofqual-regulated and academically valid but carry lower immediate employer brand recognition in UK-based private sector roles. They are popular for their university top-up pathways and with learners based outside the UK.

What is the Chartered Manager (CMgr) designation?

Chartered Manager is the highest professional status in UK management, awarded exclusively by CMI. To achieve CMgr, you must hold a CMI qualification (typically Level 5 or above), demonstrate a minimum of three years of professional management experience, and submit a professional development portfolio assessed by CMI. Active Chartered Managers must complete annual CPD to maintain the designation.

Chartered Manager holders use the designation CMgr after their name in professional contexts. The designation is comparable in professional standing to Chartered Accountant (ACA/ACCA), Chartered Engineer (CEng), or Chartered Surveyor (MRICS). In senior management recruitment, particularly in larger organisations and public sector bodies, CMgr is increasingly cited as a preferred or required credential.

How do management qualifications appear on official registers?

All CMI and ILM qualifications are listed on the Ofqual regulated qualifications register at register.ofqual.gov.uk. You can search by qualification title and awarding body to verify that a specific qualification is regulated. This is the definitive public record of regulated qualifications in England, and employers or professional bodies can use it to verify the status of any qualification you hold.

Is Lift College an approved CMI and ILM centre?

Lift College delivers CMI and ILM qualifications as an approved delivery centre. This means the qualification you earn is issued directly by the awarding body under Lift College's centre approval — your certificate carries the CMI or ILM branding and is registered on the awarding organisation's learner records system. You can verify your qualification through the awarding body's certificate verification service after completion, and it will appear on the Ofqual regulated qualifications register.

Choosing an approved centre matters because only approved centres can register learners with CMI and ILM and submit assessments for awarding. Unapproved providers cannot legally award CMI or ILM qualifications. If you are unsure whether a provider is genuinely CMI or ILM approved, ask them for their centre approval number before enrolling — Lift College provides this transparently on request.

FAQ

Your questions answered

Is a CMI qualification the same as being a member of CMI?

No. Studying for a CMI qualification automatically gives you student membership of CMI during the course, but completing the qualification does not automatically make you a full CMI member. After completing your qualification, you can apply for the appropriate grade of CMI membership (Associate or Member) and, once you have sufficient experience, apply for Chartered Manager status separately.

Are OTHM or Qualifi management diplomas recognised by UK employers?

OTHM and Qualifi qualifications are Ofqual-regulated and appear on the regulated qualifications register. They are academically valid. In practice, UK employer recognition of OTHM and Qualifi is lower than for CMI and ILM because these awarding bodies are newer and less established in the UK corporate market. For UK-based career progression, CMI or ILM is generally the stronger choice. OTHM and Qualifi are more widely used for their university top-up pathways.

Can a CMI Level 7 be topped up to an MBA?

Yes. Some UK universities offer a one-year MBA top-up for CMI Level 7 holders. The top-up involves completing the dissertation component of an MBA and typically takes 6–12 months full-time or 12–18 months part-time. This pathway is significantly faster and less expensive than completing a full two-year MBA from scratch. Specific universities offering this route include Buckingham, UWE, and several others — check individual university admissions pages for current availability.

How do employers verify a CMI or ILM qualification?

Employers can verify CMI qualifications through the CMI's online certificate verification service. ILM qualifications are verifiable through City & Guilds' certificate verification system. Both systems allow an employer (with your consent) to confirm that a specific qualification was awarded to a named individual on a specified date. All CMI and ILM qualifications are also listed on the Ofqual regulated qualifications register, which is publicly searchable.
