Management & Leadership

About Management & Leadership qualifications

Management and leadership qualifications are Ofqual-regulated awards, certificates, and diplomas offered primarily by CMI (Chartered Management Institute) and ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management). They span Levels 3 to 7 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework and cover the practical skills and strategic knowledge working managers need — from first-line supervision to board-level leadership. They are entirely assignment-based and designed for study alongside a full-time management role.

Management and leadership qualifications sit within a nationally recognised framework regulated by Ofqual. Unlike many professional qualifications, they are available entirely online and are designed from the ground up for people who are already working as managers — or are stepping into a management role for the first time.

What are CMI and ILM management qualifications?

CMI qualifications are awarded by the Chartered Management Institute, the only body in the UK and Ireland with a royal charter for management and leadership. ILM qualifications are awarded by the Institute of Leadership and Management, part of the City & Guilds Group. Both organisations offer Ofqual-regulated qualifications on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) at Levels 3, 5, and 7.

The qualifications take three forms: awards (short, focused on a single area), certificates (broader, covering several management competencies), and diplomas (the most comprehensive, covering the full breadth of management and leadership practice at each level). Most working managers enrol for a certificate or diploma depending on their time and career goals.

Who are these qualifications for?

  • Team leaders and supervisors new to their first management role
  • Operations managers and middle managers seeking formal recognition of their experience
  • Senior managers and directors aiming for Chartered Manager (CMgr) status or Level 7
  • Professionals moving into management from a technical or specialist background
  • HR, project managers, and functional leads with informal management responsibilities
  • Business owners and self-employed professionals who want structured management frameworks

How are CMI and ILM qualifications assessed?

All CMI and ILM qualifications at Levels 3, 5, and 7 are assessed through written assignments — management reports, reflective accounts, and work-based projects. There are no timed examinations. This makes them particularly well suited to working managers who can use their own workplace as the context for every assignment.

A typical CMI Level 5 Diploma involves between five and eight written assignments over 12–18 months. Assignments are submitted online and marked by a qualified CMI or ILM assessor. Feedback is returned with comments that allow improvement and resubmission if required. The pass standard requires coherent application of management theory to real workplace situations — not memorisation of academic content.

Are management qualifications equivalent to a degree?

CMI and ILM Level 5 qualifications sit at the same RQF level as a Foundation Degree or HND — they are Level 5 qualifications, not a full bachelor's degree (which is Level 6). A CMI Level 7 qualification sits at postgraduate level, broadly equivalent to a taught Master's degree module, and some CMI Level 7 completers use it to access an MBA top-up at a UK university.

Employer recognition is strong across all levels. According to CMI research (https://www.managers.org.uk/knowledge-and-insights/research/the-value-of-management-and-leadership-qualifications/), 76% of UK managers reported that holding a CMI or ILM qualification directly improved their effectiveness. The qualifications are valued for what they develop — applied management skill — rather than primarily as academic credentials.

What does CMI membership include?

  • Access to CMI's Management Direct resource library — 1,500+ management tools, templates, and research reports
  • Use of the CMI letters after your name (Assoc CMI for associate, MCMI for member)
  • Access to CMI events, webinars, and CPD opportunities
  • The formal pathway to Chartered Manager (CMgr) — the highest professional designation in UK management
  • Peer networking through CMI branches and regional groups

What does ILM membership include?

ILM membership provides access to the ILM Insights platform, a bank of management research and CPD resources, and use of ILM learner designation. ILM is part of City & Guilds Group, which means ILM members also have access to a broader professional learning community. ILM qualifications are particularly valued in public sector, healthcare, and education management contexts where City & Guilds recognition is historically strong.

How long do management qualifications take to complete?

Duration varies by qualification type and level. CMI Level 3 Awards take as little as two to three months part-time. CMI Level 3 Certificates and Diplomas typically take six to twelve months. Level 5 Certificates take six to nine months; Level 5 Diplomas take twelve to eighteen months. Level 7 qualifications typically take twelve to twenty-four months for motivated part-time learners working alongside a senior management role.

The pace is largely self-determined. Unlike degree programmes with fixed term structures, CMI and ILM online qualifications allow you to submit assignments when you are ready. Learners who can dedicate four to six hours per week typically complete on or ahead of the indicative timescales above.

FAQ

Your questions answered

Do CMI and ILM qualifications expire?

CMI and ILM qualifications do not expire once awarded. They remain valid indefinitely as part of your professional record. However, CMI and ILM both recommend ongoing CPD to maintain the currency of your management practice. Chartered Manager status, for those who hold it, requires annual CPD submission to maintain active chartered designation.

Can I study a management qualification online without attending a campus?

Yes. CMI and ILM qualifications can be studied entirely online through providers such as Lift College. All assignments are submitted digitally, tutor support is delivered via email, video, and online platform, and there are no in-person attendance requirements at any point. Study is fully flexible around work and personal commitments.

What is the difference between a CMI award, certificate, and diploma?

Awards are the shortest qualification type — typically one or two units covering a focused management topic. Certificates cover a broader range of units and take longer to complete. Diplomas are the most comprehensive qualification type at each level, covering the full breadth of management and leadership practice. Most working managers choose a certificate or diploma rather than an award for career progression purposes.

Is Lift College an approved CMI or ILM centre?

Lift College delivers CMI and ILM qualifications as an approved centre. The certificate you receive on completion is the CMI or ILM qualification — it carries the awarding body's branding and is registered directly on the learner's record with the awarding organisation. Your qualification is verifiable through the CMI or ILM system after completion.

Which sectors value CMI qualifications most?

CMI qualifications are recognised across all sectors of the UK economy. They are particularly strong in financial services, retail, logistics, manufacturing, consulting, and professional services. ILM qualifications are especially valued in public sector, NHS, local government, education, and third-sector management. Both are broadly accepted wherever the role requires formal management and leadership competence.
