Yes. There is no age limit for sitting GCSE exams. Adults can study online at home at their own pace, then sit the exam at an approved centre near them. Edexcel and OCR GCSEs are widely available through distance learning providers for adult learners of all ages.

Both are level 2 qualifications recognised by employers and universities. Functional Skills is assessed entirely online and results are available within weeks. GCSE uses a traditional 9–1 graded exam sat in May/June. GCSE is more widely recognised for teacher training and some degree entry; Functional Skills is quicker and more flexible.

Grade 4 in the 9–1 system is the direct equivalent of grade C in the old A*–G system. Ofqual confirmed the equivalence when the new grading scale was introduced in 2017. Employers and universities that ask for a grade C or above will accept a grade 4 or above.

Yes. GCSE exams must be sat in person at an approved or accredited exam centre, even if you study entirely online. Most providers help you find a local centre. National GCSE exam series run in May and June; Edexcel also offers a November resit sitting for Maths.

Online GCSE courses typically cost £300–£700 depending on the subject and provider. This usually covers study materials and tutor support but not the exam entry fee, which is charged separately by the exam centre (around £50–£150 per subject). Pay monthly with no contract, or pay annually and save 20%.

Yes. A GCSE obtained through online study and an approved exam centre is identical to one taken at school. The certificate is issued by the awarding body (AQA, Edexcel, or OCR) and regulated by Ofqual. Employers and universities cannot distinguish how or where you studied.
