Step 1: Decide your degree first
Work backwards. Identify the exact degree title at 3–5 universities you would like to attend. Check each course’s entry requirements page on the UCAS website or the university’s own admissions site.
Step 2: Match the pathway to the degree
A Nursing degree usually requires Access to HE Nursing or Access to HE Health Science Professions. A Social Work degree usually requires Access to HE Social Work or Access to HE Social Science. Generic Access to HE diplomas are accepted less often.
Step 3: Confirm grade requirements
Universities specify the grade profile they want, e.g. “45 credits at Distinction, 15 at Merit”. Higher-tariff universities (Russell Group) typically want more Distinctions; post-1992 universities are usually more flexible.
Step 4: Check optional units
Some pathways let you select optional units. If your target degree is Mental Health Nursing, choosing the Mental Health unit strengthens your UCAS personal statement.
